Last Maintenance - Completely Overhaul
Nike III was going to be used in the third BOC Challenge 1990-91 by Brad Van
Liew who was going to rebuild the boat for the race. He was going to use a
deeper keel, new taller mast, new electronics. He was going to install water
ballast tanks, and remove the unneeded engine. With the help of a six men
working crew he completely dismantled the boat then changed his mind and
disappeared somewhere to the west coast. He never came back to put the boat
together as he had promised. Gas explosion and fire in my house and the
following repairs and reconstruction kept me from my much loved sailing for
quite some time. Only during recent years could I spare some of my time and
resources to restore the boat to her original condition. The positive side of
this story is that everything in the boat had to go through a thorough full
maintenance. Everything had to be reinstalled and in many cases replaced by new
equipment, material or hardware, like the new Yanmar diesel engine and
batteries. At the same time the boat was slightly altered for cruising with the
addition of a double bank in the forward part of the boat. Installation of a new
holding tank and other improvements were made to abide with new law
requirements. Before all was done, Nike III is going to be like a new boat and
therefore deserved a new name NIKE IV.
