Sails
The boat comes with 16 sails.
The sails were originally designed under the IOR rules. The boat had one
solid rod Stearn Twin-Stay and solid rod baby stay. All original 17 sails were
made by North Sail in Great Britain. Later, due to testing and preparation for
various solo races the rigging was alternated and more sails were added. During last BOC Challenge 1986/87 the rigging consisted of three solid rod
Stearn Twin-Stay, baby stay and additional two inner forestays. Those last two
flexible stainless wire forestays could be freely attached to deck hardware and
replace possibly damaged furling/reefing Twin-Stays. For safety reason two sets
of sails were carried on deck during race - one with continuous support tape for
Grooved Twin-Stays and one with piston hooks fro flexible wires.
Solid Twin-Stays proved to be so strong and dependable with no problem during
whole circumnavigation, even when the sails were deeply reefed during 60-70
knots winds. Therefore the inner flexible stays were dismantled during recent
boat overhaul and all sails were fixed with continuous loff tape. The flexible
forestays are part of boat equipment and can be fixed back. The sails still have
grommets and piston hooks can be used if needed.
Drawing of forestays:
Sails for Stearn Twin Stay #1
There are two almost identical sails - Genua #1 Heavy and Genua # 1 Light -
used on Twin Stay # 1 for all points of sailing. The main difference is in the
weight of sail cloth.
Sails for Stearn Twin Stay #2
Boat has two sails designed for use with second furling/reefing Twin
Stay # 2. This sails are "working horses" for wind around 20 knots and for
close-wind sailing. The sails have luff foam and could be reefed about 30
percent of its size without damaging sail's shape.
Sails for Stearn Twin Stay #3
Boat is equipped with five sails which could be fixed in Twin Stay #3. All
could be furled and reefed from cockpit. If needed, all sails could be hoisted
in Twin Stay # 1 or 2., especially the Storm Jib.
Spinnakers
Trysegel - Storm Mainsail
Twin Genoas - For Trade Down Wind Sailing
Two separate sails
which fit in double grove reefing forestay.
They are high cut for safe downwind sailing - safe during heavy rolling.
Nylon Genoa
Number 1 genoa made of nylon - very convenient for light wind sailing.
She can be feely set with the help of piston hooks on spare halyards attached to
foredeck fitting.
Mainsail
The mainsail is made of dacron and has four reefs. With four reefs on, the
mainsail could be freely jibed with
tied running backstays - the mainsail will fit under them.
