Boat Building

There were two sister boats built at the same time at the Szczecin Boatyard.
One was Cetus, built for Admiral Cap for Jurek Siudy and his team, a light,
strictly racing version of the same design, with one foot longer overall length (she was
one foot longer on the bottom part of the hull and one foot shorter on deck. The
second boat was Nike II, more heavily built to minimize the risks of
solo sailing. For example, when the size of her mast or rigging was calculated,
the next bigger size was selected for safety reason (during solo sailing there
is no continuous watch for changes in sailing conditions.)
She was also equipped with a nice mahogany interior because long distance
sailing, racing, and expeditions were in her future. She received much more
powerful and dependable steering, hydraulics, navigation instruments, electrical
system and autopilots.
Both boats were built with the top boat building technology of that time,
with the use of Airex, Kevlar, Rod Rigging, Self Tailing Winches, Navtec
Hydraulic and etc.
The design concept for Nike was later turned into cruising version of the
design and about forty boat were built that way.

The sandwich fiberglass/Kevlar hull was strongly
reinforced by steel framing at the bottom to which the keel was attached as well
as two metal frames on both sides of mast for strong support of mast and its
rigging.

The Volvo Penta MD II diesel engine was located in
front of the mast for better IOR rating.

The solid mahogany interior provided 9 fixed berths
and one double bank in three separate cabins. There was a navigation station
with large table, instrument panel and settee under the entry cockpit and a
galley with a double sink, refrigerator and deep freezer.

The flush deck was molded separately and bolted
together with the hull. The deck layout was very similar to many Admiral's Cup
racing boats with two separate cockpits, a shallow one for the working crew and
a deeper one for the helmsman.
The boatbuilding took 10 months and Nike was
spectacularly launched and christened together with her sister boat Cetus in
June 1979 in Szczecin.
