The local Navy spotted the flare at 2:45 a.m. local time. At the time winds were blowing at 45 knots and it was raining heavily. They could hardly have missed it since Konioukhov, who shot the flare, was so close to their tug. The Uruguayan crew immediately launched their dinghy to round up the Konioukhov boat and tow it into the harbor.
Konioukhov is no more official Around Alone race entry and may find his stopover in this resort port yacht club expensive. He will be charged standard dock fees while tied up here.
At the same time Neil Hunter was still 188 miles from finish line. He reported: "Drifting with the current for most of the time. Not to worry - have plenty of tucker left."
