Fedor Konioukhov held a news conference to announce that he would continue to sail the Around Alone course as non-official competitor. Race Director Mark Schrader underlined that Konioukhov will not be a competitor and his day-to-day status would not be reported by Race Operations. Konioukhov would sail the remainder of the Around Alone course and hoped to leave on 10th of February, four days after the start of Leg 3.

His new communication and safety problem was solved at meetings when COMSAT announced that they would provide the same safety and communications equipment to Konioukhov as if to an official competitor. It would allow him to stay in touch with the world.
