Tropical cyclone Dani left the area with heavy rain. There was a new tropical cyclone Olinda forming at 23 S and 163 E and moving SE and intensifying. Fortunately all this would not cause big trouble to Saito who was getting close to Cape Reinga and had only 264 miles to the finish.

Petersen was only 50 miles back and enjoyed the same easterly wind, allowing him to keep a direct course for the northern tip of New Zealand. The third sailor Neil Hunter was 574 miles from the finish line and doing almost 6 knots. In his email he reported: "Weather has been very consistent with a good SE breeze which means I am almost hard on the breeze and able to sail straight at the top of New Zealand. Some warm sunshine now would be very nice. There is a lot of trimming in adjusting sail and course as the wind varies from 15-25 knots and swings back and forth through thirty degrees. But we are on track and truckin."
