Minoru Saito and Neal Petersen were held down by a central Tasman Sea high-pressure system. Petersen's average speed dropped to 0.2 knots. By the end of the day he was 586 miles from finish and dreaming: "We are still drifting and dreaming. Yes, dreaming of wind that will carry me across the finish line, into Gwen's arms who will be holding ice cream. I expect New Zealand will have good ice cream. I judge a country by the quality of its ice cream. I had the worst 24-hour run of this race. I made a whopping, hold onto your seats, 56 miles. I can walk faster than that in 24 hours."
