Yazykov was leading the remaining fleet still at sea. At the end of the day he was 323 miles from the finish line and doing seven knots. The light winds were dominating the whole area. Victor was being forced to steer by hand for the last 4,000 miles, after his autopilot had failed. This left him little time for rest and sleep and he was feeling very tired.
Over 800 miles back was Balance Bar, and Petersen only 13 miles behind her. Minoru Saito was also sailing close with 59 miles within Balance Bar, but still with 1,183 miles still left to go to Charleston.
The last four boats behind Viktor Yazykov were heading right into an enormous wind hole in which they could possibly stay for a week with little or no wind. The weather would also plague the boats with showers and thundershowers and the rest of the fleet would be satisfied with making as much as 3 or 4 knots of boat speed.
