Thiercelin was sailing fast but he was making little progress towards the finish line. Adverse wind was forcing him to tack. By the end of the day he was still 50 miles away from the finish line.

Petersen finally became a Cape Horner. After passing the Horn he was becalmed for two hours and then had to sail around the Staten Island due to unfavorable wind. But he still picked up some miles on Minoru. Both had over 1,160 miles to go.
