Marc Thiercelin finished his jury rig and with two small sails he was sailing towards Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands. He was expected to reach it on Sunday. His shore crew was already there and arranging a tow for his last ten miles to safe port. Thiercelin intended to stay in the race until the finish in Charleston.
A new aluminum mast was already under construction in La Rochelle, France, and new sails were being found in La Trinite, France and cut to fit the new mast. Whole rigging was expected to be shipped to the Falklands on Thursday, 4 March. Thiercelin and his shore crew were confident that he should arrive in Punta del Este ahead of the seven day restart deadline.

Soldini was now holding the top position in the overall standings of Around Alone. By the end of the day he was 635 miles from finish line and he was expected to arrive late on Monday or early Tuesday. It still would not be an easy task, because unfavorable weather would force Soldini to sail very close on wind all the way to Punta del Este.
There were already two winners in this leg. Marc Thiercelin and J.P. Mouligne rounded Cape Horn as first skippers of each fleet and accomplishing that they won the Guy Cotten Cape Horn Trophy.

Class II leader J.P. Mouligne was already sailing his boat in much quieter waters towards the finish. Mike Garside also joined the Cape Horn club during last night. He was holding second place just 104 miles behind Mouligne. Balance Bar and Viktor Yazykov, with his 40-footer Wind of Change Russia, should round Cape Horn by the end of the weekend.
Another 1,400 miles back, Minoru Saito, Neal Petersen and Neil Hunter were still experiencing the harsh conditions of Southern Ocean.
