Both Class I skippers, Giovanni Soldini and Marc Thiercelin were well north of the Doldrums sailing straight for Charleston. Soldini extended his lead over Thiercelin to 464 miles and continued to hold better boat speeds than Thiercelin. The long-range forecast showed that Soldini should have wind all the way to Charleston.

Garside was able to extend his lead over Mouligne to 140 miles and he should widen it even more tomorrow. He commenced moving into the trades, while Mouligne remained stuck in the Doldrums.

Mouligne crossed the equator yesterday only to be greeted by squalls. Mouligne's mainsail was torn and patched and the violent squalls were not what he needed. "Squall after squall, pouring rain, big thunderstorms and constantly shifting wind. I worked all night tacking and jibing, often moving away from Charleston." reported Mouligne.

Farther back in the fleet Viktor Yazykov was just beginning his way through the Doldrums. His passage might be a bit longer than those of the two Class II competitors in front of him, because the windless area was slowly widening to north.

Farther back Neal Petersen was able to get back in front of Saito again. Saito reported last night that his centerboard had fallen off, but that no one should worry about it because he wasn't worried.
