Weather forecast predicted nasty winds and seas near and around Cape Horn for the next 12 hours. Winds close to Cape Horn were to be westerly 30-40 knots and seas of 15-25 feet. Saito and Petersen were getting close to the Horn and were expected to have a bouncy ride. At 1330 GMT Saito was almost south and giving the Horn a wide berth of 30 to 40 miles. He was sailing at a little under six knots.

Minoru Saito reported: "I had smooth rounding on 3rd, that this time has no much winds, no rough sea not so cold, among the 3 times but I had very busy for taking a photograph picture and drinking a SAKE (Lasro's gifts) with HARRY and I gave a gold earring (one of the pair and I want to present another one to DIANA when I return to Charleston safely).

Petersen was another 120 miles astern of Saito and was expected to put the Horn behind him before the day was done.
This morning at 0940 GMT, Marc Thiercelin was 299 miles from Punta del Este. His new rig should be shipped via Buenos Aires and was expected to arrive there by the end of March. Thiercelin should have the opportunity to complete the 1998-99 Around Alone with properly prepared boat for the start of last leg on April 10.
