Thiercelin stopped in Tierra del Fuego for just over five hours. When the repair was done, unfavorable northerly breeze and stifling head seas prevented him from sailing through the Strait of Le Maire, and forced him to sail outside Staten Island. He had gusts of 60 knots as he sailed eastward and then Thiercelin fell into a windless hole and got stuck with no wind and huge confused sea for several hours.

At the same time Soldini rounded the Cape Horn and then managed to get through the Strait of Le Maire. By this maneuver he was able to cut Thiercelin's lead to only 76 miles. Now they both left Cape Horn behind and begun the last 1,000-mile sprint to Punta del Este.

In Class II Jean-Pierre Mouligne was continuing to widen the gap between his leading position and the rest of his fleet. Garside in second place was 163 miles back. The wind eased for JP and he was able to do some maintenance repair on Cray Valley. He wrote: "4000 miles of hard sailing is starting to take its toll and I am trying to be in as good a shape as I can for the last stretch."
