As the fleet was getting ready for the start on next leg, Robin Davie was making slow progress toward Auckland. As he reported, adverse wind was slowing him down: "With a decent wind direction we could be around the North Capes tomorrow and on our way south towards Auckland, but with the forecast east winds continuing, it will be tomorrow night, or Saturday morning before I get around the corner."
"… Beating to windward is something we all try to avoid, and have to bear and live with from time to time - it's a boat and soul destroying occurrence."
"Personally you feel you are going nowhere fast, and for the boat, the pounding is literally imposing strains on the boat that result in gear breakage - so you slow down as I have done so as not to break any more stuff, yet still you feel tortured by every crash and bone-jarring pound into oncoming waves…"
