Only Robin Davie was still battling the sea and other troubles to reach Auckland. His own words would describe the situation best: "A high barometer should be giving us good weather, but with the centre of the high to our south we are getting easterly winds, which for me are head winds together with short, sharp, steep head seas."
"Our best speed is about 6 to 6.5 knots which becomes 4 to 5 knots after we have pounded into successive head seas, and then our speed builds up again, before the next pounding slows us down."
"Last night and early this morning saw a weather front or disturbance of some sort, with heavy rain showers, and several hours of calms and light flukey winds, whilst South Carolina was tossed about to the swells and seas, with zero registering on the log."
"At least the emergency steering tiller on the rudderstock head is holding up OK, and the monitor steers. Which is good, as yesterday, after several days of pretty long days and nights of fixing of steering stuff, I was able to catch up on sleep a bit, as well as tidy away all the metal work, materials and tools that we had been using every day."

" The race rules required me to arrive in Auckland by 12 noon on the 30th January, so I am many days late, and as such the rule states that I will be retired from the race. However, it also goes on to state that the race committee will consider exceptions to this rule in exceptional circumstances - so on this basis I have lodged a request for consideration."
"The race committee will consider the matter when I arrive in Auckland, I am sure they will give me a fair hearing and consideration of my request, to allow me to do a very quick and rapid repair and turn around so as to sail and continue in the race."
