It was a quiet day. Not much wind and about as much news. Davie described it well in his e-mail: "The miles tell the story - it's been light winds, light airs, and calms… The vagaries of the wind are just unbelievable, and only beaten by the vagaries of South Carolina with no rudder… You balance up the boat, it heels and away you go moving well - for 5 or 10 or 15 minutes maybe, and then that all familiar bang of sail, and lurch of boat as it rolls to the sea, the wind has died yet again, South Carolina has fallen off course, and we may well be pointing towards Uruguay rather than Cape Town. It can take 20 or 30 minutes to persuade the rudderless SC in a light air calm that she wants to come around and point towards Cape Town."

Fedor Konioukhov, the last sailor in the fleet, was happier, doing slightly over four knots. "Hi everybody," he wrote, "I am carrying now all the sails, except spinnaker. No time to speak, no time to cook. I have to steer and work with sails all the time."
