Day 22, Saturday October 17, 1988

Early today, Autissier had closed to within nine miles of class leader Marc Thiercelin. She was sailing within two miles of the Brazilian coastline and fighting adverse current along the shoreline. Race officials were concerned about her close vicinity to shore and they contacted her via the COMSAT-C. Isabelle almost immediately replied: "Not in arms of Brazilian coast. Do not worry. I'm okay. Just trying to escape the bloody current."

Garside had dropped to third place. He was 43 miles behind leader Brad Van Liew and 16 miles astern of J.P. Mouligne. He was still struggling with the keel's hydraulic leak. He used up all of his engine and cooking oil and was able to stabilize the keel amidships. Jean-Pierre moved to second place.

He sent the following message: "Yesterday I was able to fix the batten problem on the main sail. After reinforcing the ends with fiberglass tape I drilled the ends and bolted them in place. The whole repair job took me 3 hours of precious time but I was happy to see that I did not lose too much ground. The main sail is up again and looks very good and I am back at full efficiency. I carry a minimum amount of tools and spare parts on board partially to save weight and also because Phil is afraid that I would hurt myself or get confused if I had too many! So back to racing. I am 40 miles from the Equator on a close reach to make the tip of Brazil. It is a beautiful morning, 15 knots of wind and flat seas. Today, Balance Bar has a 20 miles lead."
